• Why the name, “The Cannon Advantage”
Strategy and Tactics are just a couple examples of business concepts and terms borrowed from the military. Our name, The Cannon Advantage, is an extension of the application of the military terms to a business application. Military operations that have cannon have a distinct advantage over units that do not have access to cannon. Bob Cannon is a unique individual who brings 30+ years of business experience and a track record of accomplishments. His experience ranges from production to market research, product marketing, sales and sales management, Vice President, General Manager and the Boardroom for products ranging from awls to zippers for such recognized companies as AMF, Textron, Gannett, Channellock and others. He co-founded an Internet company that survived the dot bomb era and has even initiated and managed successful sports marketing efforts with NASCAR® and The World Of Outlaws®. His educational background includes an MBA and additional post graduate studies. This has led Bob to become one of less than 1% of consultants in the U.S. to be awarded the designation of Certified Management Consultant. • Referral Generation Guide
Over the course of my 30+ years in the corporate world, I have watched companies and industries face competition from low cost foreign competition. Some survived and prospered while others withered and died. There have been some common themes that I learned in this process. Low cost foreign competition induce tremendous stress in domestic organizations and there are lots of actions that can be undertaken. Some don’t work, some work for a little while and others can provide a competitive advantage for a long time.

As examples, I would suggest to you that utilizing new technology to gain a competitive advantage doesn’t work primarily because off shore competition has access to the same new technology and will have it very soon if they don’t already. The same can be said for cost reduction activities. In the long run, no amount of cost reductions will allow domestic manufacturers to compete with lower labor costs, lower fringe benefits and lower taxation.

A strong brand can provide a temporary competitive advantage, but even the strongest brand without something different behind the brand will fall to lower cost off shore competition.

True long term competitive advantage can be gained from new products, proprietary processes, customization combined with speed to market, employee empowerment and improved decision-making. These are all examples of competitive advantages that can provide a longer term competitive advantage.

This is my area of expertise and concentration. Early in my career I watched three employers succumb to a change in their market from offshore competition. At the same time I have seen domestic manufacturers survive and prosper in the face of the same changes. The focus of all my efforts is to help organizations survive and prosper.
